I am a photographer and artist based in Somerset who creates photos that encourage the viewer to stop and take a long look at hidden rhythms. My work explores repetition in patterns and movement by collaborating with wildlife and the environment as my subjects.

My inspiration comes from scientific imagery seen in the work of Etienne Jules-Marey and the grid documentations of Bernd and Hilla Becher. These images are taken as evidence photos, made to record the unseen patterns and movements only the unconscious mind sees, I use photography as my tool to capture the passing of time, combining frames to create lines of rhythm.

Instead of focusing on narratives, my work is used for looking, taking a minute to pause and relax the brain so the eyes read the image. I choose these small details as they are often ignored but I want to show the beauty in them. By using various compositions including triptychs and typologies I have created different looking methods forcing an interaction between the viewer and the work to question why these structures form.

Jess

Jessica Watt, born in 2005, grew up in Surrey but moved to Somerset in 2014 where she connected with the countryside and nature around her. After being given the opportunity to study photography in school she found a way to connect with the environment through creating art. She aims to capture the repeating patterns and structures found in the world around us. Her images dissect small movements studying how they warp and repeat often connecting them to other aspects of nature.

Jessica makes this work to ask the viewer questions, they should want to understand more wondering why these structures appear, what makes these patterns, and how do these lines of rhythm evolve. She uses her images as visual evidence and by creating sequences you can start to read them, having a long look at them.
